April 2025 Cultivating Friendships

Nurse Naume

Celebrating 15 years of Friendship with Iceland

Buiga Sunrise Uganda hosted 16 visitors from Iceland - it was a whirlwind of activity!  Retired board member Hrefna Bachman and current board member Eva Gomes planned and organized the trip - we appreciate all the time and energy they dedicate to cultivating this amazing connection!  Past projects supported and financed by our friends in Iceland include:

Planting coffee trees for income generating

Renovating and upgrading Buiga Sunrise School

Building new chairs, desks and shelves for the classrooms

Constructing Aurora Birth House

Home Visits

Sunrise students brought our friends from Iceland home to meet their families and better understand some of the challenges people face in rural Uganda.

Jerseys and Shoes!

Every child at Sunrise school received an Iceland Jersey with their name printed on the back and a brand new pair of sturdy leather shoes.  You can’t imagine how happy everyone was to receive their gifts!

Hoops and Nets

The Sunrise kids love football! Two new goal posts were donated and the students were introduced to basketball, which is now a new favorite!

Workshops

Singalongs, games, art, photography and social media workshops were organized as an opportunity to learn and play together.

Visiting the Jajjas

Our friends toured the village on motorcycle taxis, visited a local pub  and were hosted by a group of jajja’s (grandmothers) for a traditional cooking demonstration  and  a communal meals.

Helping Hands

Our visitors got hands on and helped with all kinds of practical repairs and maintenance to keep the school looking it’s best.

Community Outreach with Gentle Hearts

The Gentle Hearts midwives continue to work and serve in the community as we fundraise to reopen the maternity under a more sustainable model.  Our friends from Iceland joined the outreach and witnessed the community need as people lined up to receive much needed services.

Saying Farewell

Hrefna Bachmann ~ Retired Sunrise Board Member

Nearly 300 students, staff and community members gathered together for a farewell party hosted by our visitors. Fire breathing acrobats, dancers, drumming, speeches, presentations, food and a friendly but fierce football match - it was definitely a memorable day for everyone.

The future depends on what you do today.
