Welcoming a New School Nurse
Achipe Naume joined Buiga Sunrise School this month and a storage room has been renovated to serve as the new school sickbay. Naume is providing first aid, teaching healthy habits, introducing reproductive health to teens, and promoting the overall well-being of all students. Sunrise is very happy to welcome her to the team.
Never Too Old To Learn a New Skill

Help Us Keep Sunrise Shining!
In 2018 Sunrise began moving away from the sponsorship model and started implementing a model for local sustainability, which utilizes a two tiered tuition system; children from higher income families enroll as boarding students and pay full tuition fees, and children from lower income families attend as day scholars and pay subsidized tuition fees. Full tuition from the boarding section provides financial support for low-income students; this ensures equal access to high quality education for all children, regardless of socio-economic status.
Sunrise was close to achieving it’s sustainability goal in 2018, with the addition of a boarding section, but then Covid rocked the world. Schools across the country were closed for 2 years and prices for essential goods began escalating. The cost of feeding students and paying salaries has risen significantly. The current number of boarding students is no longer sufficient to off-set day to day expenses. We are applying for grant funding to expand the boys and girls dormitories, which will increase our boarding section by 100 students and shift our ratio to 50% boarders + 50% day scholars. If we are successful in securing funds, this will be the final step for Buiga Sunrise School to achieve 100% local sustainability.
Sunrise School needs a helping hand until the new dormitories are constructed - we know how to stretch a dollar but there are 23 staff to pay, a campus to maintain and nearly 300 children to feed. Please help us keep Sunrise shining!

Gentle Hearts
Midwife Harriet has been working in the community since January 2025, after Grace Family Clinic closed for restructuring in December 2024. We are collaborating on a plan to re-open the maternity side of the clinic, under a more sustainable model, when funding is secured. Until then, Harriet has been providing prenatal checks, home deliveries, and referrals to ensure mothers and babies stay connected, supported and healthy.
