Music, Dance & Drama Take Centre Stage
The excitement is building at Buiga Sunrise School as students prepare for Music, Dance and Drama (MDD) Day, an important part of Uganda's Ministry of Education curriculum.
Students are divided into three houses—Iceland House, Canada House, and America House—and spend months rehearsing songs, traditional dances, and dramatic performances. Through music and storytelling, they celebrate Uganda's diverse culture while sharing important social and health messages.
MDD Day is one of the school's most anticipated events, bringing together families, community members, and special guests to cheer on the students. It's a joyful celebration of culture, creativity, and teamwork, while showcasing the growth and achievements of Buiga Sunrise School.
Leadership Begins Here
Leadership was in the spotlight this month as students at Buiga Sunrise School took part in our annual prefect elections. Candidates campaigned and delivered speeches, sharing their ideas and vision for making our school an even better place.
Students from Grade 1 to Grade 7 cast their votes, gaining valuable lessons in democracy, civic responsibility, leadership, and accountability.
Fourteen prefects were elected, including the Head Boy, Head Girl, Senior Prefect, Academic Prefect, Agriculture Prefect, Sports Prefect, Welfare Prefect and Health Prefect. As ambassadors for the school, they represent their fellow students, uphold our values with integrity, and work together to support the smooth running of school life and community events.

Raising the Roof!
Our new girls' dormitory has reached another exciting milestone—the roof is on and the electrical wiring is complete! Construction is on track to finish in July with the installation of windows and doors, followed by plastering and painting.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone whose generosity and hard work have made this project possible. Thanks to careful planning, construction has remained on budget, and with new partnerships we expect the new space to be filled with boarders when the new school year begins in February.
The dormitory will provide a safe, secure home where girls can focus on their education, study in the evenings with reliable lighting, and avoid long, often unsafe walks to and from school each day. Even more exciting, every girl who boards at Buiga Sunrise creates space for another local girl to attend as a day student on scholarship—doubling the impact of this incredible investment.
Learning Beyond the Books
During the semester break, Access Knowledge Africa's Champions of Literacy Program remained busy serving children throughout the community. Our literacy champions conducted a variety of outreach activities targeting children ages 2–12, helping them develop reading, spelling, and storytelling skills through play-based learning methods and locally made educational materials.
Through these outreaches, the team reached and supported 150 children, creating fun and engaging opportunities for learning while fostering a love for literacy at an early age.
One inspiring story comes from Champion Mirembe Joy, whose dedication to literacy continues to grow. Joy has demonstrated an increased love and passion for promoting literacy within our community, especially among young children. Her commitment, enthusiasm, and steady progress have made her a valuable role model and advocate for early childhood learning. We are proud of the impact she is making and look forward to seeing her continue to inspire young readers and learners.
A Clear Vision for Grace Family Health Centre
Excitement continues to build as Grace Family Health Centre prepares for its planned reopening this October. We are delighted to announce a new partnership with the Eye Department at Old Kampala Hospital. During our upcoming community medical camp, their professional team will provide free eye examinations and free eyeglasses for those in need—bringing the gift of sight to hundreds of people in our community.
We are also thrilled to share that a long-time Sunrise supporter has generously committed a $10,000 matching grant to help launch our October fundraising campaign. Every dollar donated at our fundraising dinner will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $10,000.
If our guests rise to the matching challenge, we'll be 80% of the way toward our $25,000 fundraising goal for clinic renovations and essential medical equipment. With your support, Grace Family Health Centre will soon be ready to provide quality care to the families we serve.
