January 2026 A New Chapter for Buiga Sunrise School

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We are pleased to share that Sunrise Centre Canada has approved a 2026 partnership with the Bond Beyond Blood Coalition from Banda Kyandaaza, Uganda — a community-led group formed to protect and rebuild Buiga Sunrise School.

The coalition is led by former students Nakabuya Jovia , alongside advisor Mr Okidi Tom, who is serving as the Chairperson and providing non-operational oversight on a volunteer basis.  Together, they are stepping forward with a shared understanding that past governance and accountability failures damaged trust — and a firm commitment to doing things differently.

This coalition was intentionally created to reduce risk through shared responsibility, strong internal controls, and strict financial discipline. Their first-term request totals $4,282, a modest investment to prevent school closure and keep 150 children in school. Funds are allocated for

  • short-term scholarship incentives to support enrollment

  • start-up food costs

  • registering the school with Uganda’s Ministry of Education and securing a Centre Number — a critical step to improve credibility and reduce malpractice risk

Importantly, the coalition has assumed full responsibility for salaries, staffing, and daily operations, with community contributions as the core revenue model. Scholarships will be used only as temporary enrollment incentives, not ongoing subsidies. The coalition will also maintain a clear separation between its operations and the Canadian charitable entity.

We are deeply proud of these alumni and community members. Their motivation is not rooted in profit or recognition — it is love, responsibility, and lived experience. Like many of the children they are now fighting for -younger brothers, sister and neighbors - they once depended on a helping hand to access education.

This is a big task. But we believe they deserve the chance to try to save the school they love. We will be watching closely, offering guidance where needed, and — most importantly — giving them space and autonomy to lead their own future.

Just when things feel most uncertain, a new way forward often appears in the most unexpected way.  Thank you for standing with communities who choose accountability, compassion, and courage.  Please reach out if you have any questions about this new partnership - sunrisecentrecanada@gmail.com

With Gratitude,
Sunrise Centre Canad
